City Golf Club
Golf on the Darling Downs
The City Golf Club is your award-winning local Club located close to the centre of the CBD and at the heart of the Toowoomba community.
We are home to a magnificent 18-hole championship course that has hosted the prestigious professional tournament – the Coca-Cola Queensland PGA Championship – since 2009.
The Club has an on-site Pro Shop to take care of all your golfing needs, with a wide range of the latest equipment, clothing and accessories in stock. We have dedicated Australian PGA-qualified Professionals providing coaching, outstanding practice facilities including a state of the art coaching studio, and a magnificent practise range.
We welcome golf groups, with friendly staff committed to creating a golf day to remember both on and off the course.
The Clubhouse welcome is warm and genuine. Catch one of the many shows on offer, enjoy a meal in any of our restaurant or cafés, or a drink in Reitano’s Bar and when it’s time to go home make use of our courtesy bus service.
Family-friendly, we have Kaddies Kids’ Room to keep the young ones amused. Or why not enjoy a game together at Toowoomba’s newest attraction, Mini Golf?
With modern accommodation just across from the course at the 4.5-star boutique City Golf Club Motel, we are the perfect base for a short golfing break.
City Golf Club has a superb championship course that all categories and standards of golfer will enjoy playing, with the great design and multiple teeing positions presenting an opportunity for players of all abilities to truly test their game.
The course at its longest is a 5,900-metre par-70 test for men, with three par-3s on the outward nine and one par-3 and two par-5s coming home. The women’s course is a no less enthralling, par-72 layout measuring 5,338 metres, benefiting from extra shots on two of the tougher par-4s on the card for the men, the 1st and 18th.
The lush Kikuyu fairways and carpet like Bentgrass greens have made our incredible golf course the perfect host to the Queensland PGA Championships. The course here at City Golf Club is a golfer’s dream and has made a name for itself as one of the best Golf Courses in South-East QLD. It is the sweeping city views, variety and changes in elevation that makes the layout of the course so appealing, right up to the challenging 18th finishing hole.
By modern standards the course is not considered long, but that does not make it any less of a challenge. The fairways are tight, particularly on the front nine, with trees lying in wait to punish those errant off the tee.
The far more undulating back nine, with wider fairways, offers more of a chance to open the shoulders, that does not mean that driver off the tee on everything bar the par-3s is an automatic choice. The best advice is to pick the longest club that you feel you can consistently hit straight on the day.
While the greens – redesigned by renowned golf course architects Ross Watson and Richard Chamberlain – are among the best in the region, it is here where another challenge lies. Several contain subtle borrows which only become apparent after you see your ball rolling away from the hole. You’ll have to be at your best with the flat stick in hand to make birdie on the 3rd, 10th and 12th especially.
In summer, it’s not unheard of for players to end up back off the green if they are left with a downhill putt on some of the slicker surfaces.
Members or visitors who play the course regularly learn which side of the hole to leave their approach, giving themselves birdie opportunities, rather than having to putt defensively to save par. Course knowledge is everything, which is why after one round you will want to come back again and again.
There are many great holes, but without doubt one of the most memorable is the 18th, which is Stroke Index 1 on the card for the men.
Even if you negotiate the fairway bunkers and avoid tree trouble, there is still work to be done. If the wind is against you, you could be left with a very long club in your hand with which to find the green that lies below you and in front of the Clubhouse in the distance.
It’s a great finishing hole and one where many championships have been won and lost. Certainly no lead is secure until the last has been safely negotiated. Just ask Tim Hart, the runner-up in the 2016 Coca-Cola Queensland PGA Championship (keep reading for Tim’s heartbreaking story).
Any club golfer making par on the last can consider themselves an exceptional player and can savour that first drink in the Clubhouse all the more.
Visitors wishing to enjoy our picturesque golf course are made to feel most welcome here at City Golf Club.
Social golf is available most days outside the Club’s designated competition times or other major events such as corporate golf days. It is always advisable to phone ahead to book a tee-time, to check with the Club our competition schedule for the day or to book online at www.citygolf.com.au/golf/members-and-public-bookings/
Enjoy the golf and stay for a bite to eat and a drink in the Clubhouse, where you will find the welcome just as warm as the one you received in the Pro Shop or out on the course.
City Golf Club has a wonderful course. Not too easy, not too tough, but the perfect challenge for any player no matter their level of expertise. Sets of clubs can be hired, as can electric carts or trolleys for those wishing to save their energy to play their best golf.
Toowoomba is a great place to enjoy a short break. We are world-famous for the award-winning Toowoomba Carnival of Flowers in September which draws thousands to the city.
There are a host of other places to visit including a number of stunning parks and gardens, and heritage-listed attractions such as the Picnic Point Lookout and Empire Theatre. And, of course, there’s a spectacular golf course to enjoy too! Visit southernqueenslandcountry.com.au to find out more about the region.
May we suggest a great place to stay? The City Golf Club Motel is just around the corner and offers fabulous facilities. There is also a selection of great Stay and Play packages on offer, tailored to suit all groups big or small.
